The sealed nature of bids requires a commitment mechanism - typically a deposit equal to or greater than the bid amount - to ensure winners can fulfill their obligations.

Blind Auctions have been utilized in government procurement and corporate M&A to prevent favoritism and collusion. The mechanism gained prominence in spectrum license auctions during the 1990s. Blockchain implementations emerged around 2017, introducing commit-reveal schemes and later zero-knowledge proofs to maintain bid privacy while ensuring verifiable outcomes on public networks.

Design Considerations

  • Bid Duration: Define the optimal length for the bidding and reveal phases. A longer bid period increases participation but risks strategic delays, while shorter durations enhance efficiency but may limit bidder engagement.
  • Commitment Mechanism: Choose between hash-based commit-reveal (lower gas costs but requires bidders to reveal their bid manually) and zero-knowledge proofs (automates bid verification but is computationally intensive).
